It’s that time again! BTS/Bangtan Boys released yet another highly anticipated album LOVE YOURSELF: 承 ‘Her’ which has the internet spiralling (myself included). Let’s dive into it!
On September 4, the first taste of the new album was uploaded with the LOVE YOURSELF: 承 ‘Her’ ‘Serendipity’ Comeback Trailer. Currently at over 29 million views, this track is a solo by lead vocalist Jimin; it later served as the intro song of the final album. If the organic visuals and heavenly scoring of “Serendipity” was supposed to be a trailer of the entire album, then we were in for a soft, ethereal comeback. Compared to BTS’s debut album, this is a big leap from their classic hard, rap-heavy sound.
The music video for “DNA,” the first promotional single of LOVE YOURSELF: 承 ‘Her’ was released on September 16; it currently stands at 53 million views and counting. The song starts out with soft whistling that is soon accompanied by guitar and steady percussion. Deep-voiced V is first to sing, giving listeners a laid-back vibe that quickly escapes once the first rap verse cuts in from J-Hope. Similar to the groups previous single “Blood, Sweat, and Tears,” the song follows a quick rap verse/soft vocal chorus pattern with heavy electropop breaks sprinkled into the mix. The visuals of this MV greatly counters that of “Serendipity” through the use of highly saturated colors, dance numbers, and background graphics with an emphasis on space/science.
The “DNA” music video was released along with the entire album which included 9 tracks: 8 new songs and 1 audio recording of the group’s Billboard Music Awards speech from their win back in May. Upon giving the entire album and once-through, “Pied Piper” was my top pick with “Serendipity” and “DNA” as close runner-ups.
(EDIT: I just read the translation for the Pied Piper lyrics and I’m not crying u are!!! Also the performances of these songs are fire!!)
One track in particular was majorly hyped before the album even dropped: “Best of Me.” A rumored collab between The Chainsmokers and BTS was highly anticipated as Andrew Taggart reportedly worked with the idol group in writing the song. However, this song is not noticeably different from any other BTS track, so the hype was…just hype, in my opinion. In any case, the collab helped introduce fans of The Chainsmokers with BTS’s music (and vice versa) and assist in expanding their respective fanbases: any musician’s goal from working with other artists!
In all, this album is absolutely worth the listen! LOVE YOURSELF: 承 ‘Her’ is available to stream on Spotify and can be purchased through the iTunes store.
